For some Land Cruisers, the right upgrade is no upgrade at all. Tough Terrain can build a cabin around original or original-style 40 Series seating — restoring the simplicity, proportion and utilitarian character that made the FJ40 interior so distinctive.

Sometimes Original Is The Most Special Specification.
The early Land Cruiser cabin was not designed to impress with luxury. It was designed to work. Straightforward vinyl, exposed painted metal, simple frames and compact rear jump seats are part of the FJ40's identity. A carefully restored original-style interior can therefore feel more authentic — and more desirable — than a heavily modernised cabin.
Original Frames
Existing or sourced factory seat frames can form the foundation of an authentic restoration where suitable examples are available.
Period Trim
Vinyl, stitching and foam profiles chosen to retain the visual simplicity of a factory-style 40 Series interior.

Later 40 Series bucket seats retain the upright, compact proportions and restrained vinyl finish that suit the vehicle's utilitarian cabin.

Original Seat Restoration

The objective is not simply to fit new covers. A convincing original-style seat restoration starts with the frame, mechanisms and mounting hardware, then builds back through foam, trim and the details appropriate to the year.

Suitable original front or rear seat frames can be retained where present, or sourced subject to availability and condition.

Seat Frames
Original frames preserve the correct width, height, hinge points and visual relationship with the rest of the 40 Series cabin.
Seat Foam
Collapsed cushions change both appearance and driving position. Correctly shaped replacement foam can revive the original profile.
Vinyl & Stitching
Period-style vinyl, vertical pleats, seams and welt details help keep the retrim visually sympathetic to a factory cabin.
Headrests
Headrest treatment varied by era and specification, so the vehicle year and desired restoration standard should guide the final approach.
Jump Seat Hardware
