Seat Directions For Different Builds
Interior

The Seat Changes The Whole Vehicle.
A classic 4x4 can have beautiful paint, a rebuilt drivetrain and a completely restored chassis, yet the driver's relationship with the vehicle is defined every time they sit down. The right seat can alter support, access, driving position, long-distance comfort and the visual character of the entire cabin.
Support
Side and shoulder support can make a substantial difference to how secure and controlled the driver feels.
Comfort
For touring builds, seat contour, lumbar support and cushion design matter just as much as appearance.
Character
Pepita, black upholstery, integrated headrests or classic separate headrests can completely change the atmosphere of a restored 4x4.

Seat / Build Pairing
Not Every FJ Should Have The Same Interior.
The seat should support the character of the finished vehicle rather than look like an accessory added after the build was completed.
Heritage
A more traditional build where the interior should remain visually sympathetic to the vehicle's age and original proportions.
Consider: Classic LX / Classic LSGrand Touring
A restored 4x4 intended for longer journeys, regular road use and a cabin that prioritises support without becoming overly aggressive.

Modern engine, automatic transmission and upgraded cabin, where a more contemporary seat can sit naturally within the specification.

How We Approach Seat Integration
Specify The Seat Before We Finish The Cabin.
A seat installation affects much more than upholstery. Driving position, baseframe compatibility, clearance, seat belts, electrics and local approval can all influence the final solution.

Define The Build
We establish the vehicle, intended use, driver requirements and overall interior direction before selecting a seat family.

Confirm Fitment
Vehicle-specific fitment, baseframe availability, dimensions and mounting requirements need to be confirmed before a seat is ordered.

Set The Driving Position
The objective is not simply to bolt in a seat; it is to achieve a sensible relationship between seat, pedals, steering wheel and cabin.

Design Around It
Door cards, rear seating, carpets, console details and surrounding trim can be coordinated visually around the selected front seats.

Final Check
Mounting, clearances, belt routing, electrical requirements and the applicable vehicle approval requirements are reviewed before delivery.
Cabin Design
Build The Interior Around The Seat.
The chosen front seats can become the visual reference point for the rest of the Tough Terrain cabin. Rather than modifying safety-critical seat structures, the surrounding interior can be designed to complement the approved seat specification.
Pepita & Check
Classic-pattern seat upholstery can inspire matching or complementary details elsewhere in the cabin.
Black Leather
A restrained specification that works naturally with both period and modernised Tough Terrain interiors.
Tan Cabin
Where the selected RECARO is supplied in black, tan leather can still be used strategically on rear seats, panels and other interior areas.
Technical Trim
Modern performance builds can combine darker surfaces, technical fabrics, contrast stitching and simplified cabin detailing.
RECARO seat upholstery, shell structure, airbags and other safety-related
components should not be altered outside approved manufacturer options.
Tough Terrain's bespoke work can instead be concentrated on the surrounding
vehicle interior unless a suitable approved seat option is available.
Fitment Matters
The Right Seat Has To Be The Right Installation.
RECARO itself provides a seat fit guide and baseframe information for supported vehicles. A seat's product certification does not automatically mean that every installation is approved in every vehicle or country.
Baseframe
Vehicle-specific seat mounts and approved fitment information should
be checked before committing to a seat.
Seat Belts
Belt type, anchorage and routing must remain suitable for the seat,
vehicle and intended road use.
Electrics
Electric adjustment, heating or airbag-equipped seats can require
additional vehicle-specific integration.
Approval
TÜV/ABE, FIA or other seat certifications are product-specific.
Registration and road-use requirements must be confirmed for the
country where the vehicle will be used.
Availability
Model, upholstery and accessory availability can vary by market and
should be confirmed at the point of order.
